The Challenge: More Material, Heavy Loads and Harsh Conditions

In 2023, changes in Latvia's environmental legislation more than doubled landfill fees. For CleanR Verso, the shift strengthened the business case for recovering more value from construction and demolition waste while reducing dependence on landfill and incineration.

The required system had to process a demanding feedstock made up of dense, irregular and oversized materials. It also had to maintain stable throughput, clean stone fractions thoroughly enough for reuse in road construction and underlayers, and support consistent manual sorting of material larger than 180 mm.

Installation added another layer of complexity: the work took place without a building cover during a harsh Latvian winter. Equipment durability, installation sequencing and worker conditions therefore had to be considered alongside throughput and separation quality.

The Solution: A Robust, Shredder-Less Sorting System

Azortum partnered with CleanR Verso to engineer and deliver a heavy-duty C&D waste sorting line with a design capacity of 25 tonnes per hour and an annual target of 50,000 tonnes. The line separates the incoming stream into reusable and marketable fractions: ferrous metal, wood, wires, plastics, cardboard, stones and RDF.

Instead of applying a conventional shredder-led process, the system was designed to operate without a shredder. Removing this high-energy process stage lowers electricity demand, limits the creation of fine dust and helps preserve the purity of recovered materials.

The conveyor system was engineered for continuous heavy-duty operation. Oversized material above 180 mm is distributed evenly before manual sorting into dedicated bins. A fog-based dust suppression system over the screening and loading areas improves air quality, protects workers and reduces particulate emissions around the plant.

Protecting Equipment Through Intelligent Vibration Control

The vibrating screens include an intelligent absorber powered by compressed air. By absorbing vibration shocks, the system reduces structural strain, supports smoother operation and helps extend equipment service life. This is particularly important in C&D applications, where large and abrasive material can place repeated peak loads on screening equipment and supporting structures.

Testing the Line Under Maximum Load

Before handover, the complete line was stress-tested at maximum load. The test verified that the integrated conveyors, screening stages, manual sorting points and output handling could operate as one stable process under demanding conditions.

The completed line gives CleanR Verso a durable platform for recovering cleaner fractions while managing heavy, variable construction waste. Its combination of shredder-less processing, robust conveying, dust control and vibration protection supports lower energy use, improved output quality and long-term equipment reliability.
